 Learning to use Progressive Lenses
Varilux® lenses let you see sharply at all distances, learning how to get the most out of these lenses is easy. Try these simple exercises.
Whatever you want to focus on, simply point your nose at the object, then raise or lower your head until it is in focus, you will automatically be using the part of the lens that is right for the distance of the object.
| |
Looking down the lens your focus changes smoothly and gradually from one distance to the next; so try this exercise:
| |
Look straight ahead out a window or door – this is your clear distance vision
| |
Slowly bring your attention closer to you, e.g. to the table – this is you intermediate vision
| |
Finally, look at a book or newspaper to experience your near vision
| |
Now change your attention quickly from outside to your newspaper or book – the lens allows a seamless change from one to the other
| |
Focus through the lenses changes when you raise and lower your chin, you can use this technique to fine tune focus for a certain tasks. To demonstrate this try the following:
| |
Stand up – now, without moving your head, look down to your feet. Now move your chin down until you can see your feet clearly
| |
Remember this exercise when on stairs or escalators
| |
Now experience the edges of the lens – look straight ahead and move your eyes to look through an area of the lens further from the centre. What do you feel?
| |
These areas are not designed for our sharpest vision but help us with our 3-D and side vision. You will use the more central parts of the lens for clear vision and turning towards what you are looking at will ensure greatest clarity.

For computer users:
Keeping your computer screen in focus will be easy, here are some simple things to remember:
| |
Your Varilux lenses are designed for looking down so check the current height of your computer screen is below your eye level allowing you to adjust your focus for the screen.
| |
A good tip is too adjust you're the top of the screen to be level with your line of gaze.
| |
If you are needing to adjust your head too much; adjust the height of the screen or your chair till you are comfortable.
